Locating Technical and Professional Communication at Two-Year Institutions

Project Background

Generously funded by a 2018 Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication (CPTSC) research grant, “Locating Technical and Professional Communication (TPC) at Two-Year Institutions” commenced in August 2018.

The goals of the project included identifying TPC courses, certificates, concentrations, degrees, emphases, and programs from 1,235 public and private not-for-profit two-year institutions in the United States.

In the process of gathering nearly 15,000 data points that provided information about TPC curricula and programs at two-year colleges (2YCs), we updated baseline knowledge for future studies.

Project Team

The project research team included Kristin, Timothy J. Elliott (DePaul University), Gustav Karl Henrik Wiberg (University of Bern, Switzerland and Nordic Electrochemistry ApS), and 2 undergraduate student research assistants, Yocelyn and Qahir.

Project Publications & Presentations

  • “Locating Technical and Professional Communication at Two-Year Institutions” (2020; open access)
  • “Updating Information about Technical and Professional Communication at Two-Year Colleges” (2020; paywall/subscription access).

We reported our findings during a panel presentation at the CPSTC Conference in 2021 in the session, “Locating Technical and Professional Communication at Two-Year Institutions.“

Project Future

The project continues as the research team works to make the nearly 15,000 data points openly accessible for other scholars to use. The research team is currently working with a database designer to do so.
